BeachBums a Reef-Friendly Surf Wax with Hikkaduwa’s Surf Community

For the past year, I’ve been collaborating with local surf schools in Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka, to develop an all-natural surf wax that’s effective, durable, and gentle on the reef ecosystems. This journey has brought countless learning experiences, a spirit of innovation, and a deepened appreciation for Sri Lanka’s vibrant ocean environments. The surf instructors in Hikkaduwa played a key role, offering valuable feedback at every stage. They knew exactly what they needed from a wax: something durable, sticky, and perfect for tropical waters. But, most importantly, it had to be reef-safe. Their insights shaped a product that aligns with their environmental values while delivering the performance needed for Sri Lanka’s warm, clear waters. In my research, I aimed to find natural ingredients that would provide both firmness and grip, and also contribute positively to the environment. One of the key discoveries was using calcium carbonate to brighten the wax so it's protected from UV rays — calcium carbonate is the mineral what corals are made of. It not only works as a great filler, gives firmness to the wax but is also reef-friendly, making it a safe, natural choice for marine life. After experimenting with different consistencies of bees wax, coconut oil and plant resins, I managed to create a formula with ingredients that blend harmoniously with the natural environment, providing the texture and performance that surfers love - there's more active active testing to be made. This wax is more than just a product; it’s part of a broader mission to raise awareness about ocean-safe materials. Partnering with surf schools allows us to share this message with surfers who feel deeply connected to the ocean. Choosing reef-safe wax is one simple way we can all help protect the ecosystems we rely on.This project has been a rewarding experience, one that combines product creation with a commitment to sustainable choices and the local surf culture. Here’s to more eco-friendly waves, powered by nature! 🌊referencesScience. (2019). Dear NOAA-20: Why looking at Earth from above is our most critical space mission.
